For iPhone Users, TV over 3G

slingplayer1 270x144 For iPhone Users, TV over 3GiPhone owners, your TV is going 3G.

After about a month of testing AT&T said it will allow iPhone users to watch their own TVs over the 3G network using the SlingPlayer Mobile app.

The app accesses a Slingbox, which when attached to a home TV tuner or digital video recorder, lets a person control and watch their TV remotely on computer or mobile device through an Internet connection.

AT&T had previously objected to the use of the SlingBox over the 3G network because it was thought the app used so much bandwidth that it could disrupt the network for other users, said an AT&T spokesman.

Slingbox has now been cleared to broadcast because AT&T has determined that the amount of bandwidth needed to transmit video was not problematic.

Previously the Slingbox could be used on the iPhone, but only when there was a Wi-Fi connection, which shifted the strain from the 3G data network. However, some phones running Windows Mobile, like the Motorola Q and Samsung BlackJack, have long been able to access a Slingbox over AT&T’s 3G network by downloading an app directly from Slingbox. AT&T said that would have been against its terms of service, however.
