I am looking to buy an ipod touch. What is this software, and what does it do? Thanks.
Ok…well I was looking up what it was, and it said that it had features. Could someone tell me what those were, if there are any?

It’s not software. It’s the device firmware, basically the equivalent of the operating system on a computer. Like a computer’s OS, firmware ultimately needs to be kept up to date in order to support apps and new features.
It’s basically all the features of the device. 99% of the over 200,000 available apps have been updated to be compatible with the current firmware and they won’t work without it so it’s not like you really have a choice in firmware just like you can no longer use an older version of iTunes; just like your computer’s OS needs to be kept up to date. Sometime during June, the new 4.0 update will be made available but not all iPod Touches are compatible with many of its new features so, at least for a time, those will still be able to run on the current firmware and Apple will still be developing it but once the 4.0 is no longer a paid option, they’ll stop development of the previous one. It’s just like a computer’s OS. For example, Windows XP SP2. SP3 came out years ago but you could still use SP2. They just announced that they won’t be doing any development of SP2 anymore, which means most software will require SP3 or a newer OS such as Vista or Windows 7.
